How To Break Free From the Procrastination Trap Once And For All

You’re racing to meet a deadline… again.

Your heart is pounding, and you’re kicking yourself for once more waiting until the last minute to start.

Why do you keep doing this to yourself?

You feel disgusted, stressed out, fed up.

You vow next time will be different. You’ll start earlier and finish with time to spare. Bright and early tomorrow you will make a list and tick those items off one by one. You can do this!

Then tomorrow comes, and all of your good intentions go right out the window. One distraction after another keeps you from accomplishing your goal. And again, you end the day with a longer list than you started with.

Hopelessness sets in. You feel like you’re drowning under the burden. You fear the dire consequences of continuing on this way. It’s a bleak picture.

Left unchecked, procrastination can quickly transform into a terrible habit. But it’s a habit that you can break — with some creative strategies.

Are you ready to take back control of your life? Awesome! Here are your weapons. Pick one or more, and it’s on to victory!

  1. Eliminate The Nonessentials

Review each item on your list with a critical eye. Why do you want or need to do it? What if you never completed it? What would the consequences be? If you don’t want to do it, and it’s nonessential, cross it off your list.

How many of these tasks truly belong to you? If it isn’t (or shouldn’t be) your responsibility, it’s not surprising you’d procrastinate. Cross it off, and move on.

You can’t get out of it? If you could spend your time more productively elsewhere (and that puts food on your table), by all means cross it off your list, and put it on someone else’s. Delegate it, or hire someone.

  1. Change The Rules

Sometimes a task seems so overwhelming that you don’t know where to start. Dropping everything else is not an option, so you procrastinate. Take the pressure off yourself. You don’t have to complete it all at once. Instead, chip away at it bit by bit.

Commit to spending just five minutes on this task. Set a timer, and then give it your all. Knowing the seconds are ticking down will give you an adrenaline rush, so you’ll accomplish more in that short space of time than you ordinarily would.

When the timer goes off, evaluate how you feel. Are you satisfied with your results? Great, then move on to something else. But if you find yourself jazzed and wanting to continue, set the timer for another five minutes, and have at it. Repeat until you are ready to stop.

Removing the burden of completion causes a mental shift and a change of perception eliminating the need to procrastinate. And you just might surprise yourself by getting more done than you expected. Those five-minute bursts will add up, and before you know it, the task will be complete.

Bonus tip: Avoid the trap of using low-energy times of the day to implement this strategy. Make sure to schedule your five-minute marathons during your most productive hours.

  1. Play To Win

Do you enjoy playing games? Then make a game out of it. Time yourself. See if you can set a new personal speed record for time to completion. Completion = winning. Then celebrate.

Give yourself a prize, and make it something awesome. If it’s a particularly large task, break it into increments, and give yourself small prizes at each milestone. Your game, your rules!

By inventing creative ways to accomplish your goals, you’re creating new habits and paving new neural pathways, effectively retraining your brain. That’s definitely something to celebrate.

  1. Tap It Away

Try something entirely different — energy work. A simple, effective tool called EFT may be just the solution you need. It’s based on the theory that all illnesses begin with an emotional cause. Address that cause and you’ll solve the problem.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), is like acupuncture except you use your fingers rather than needles. By tapping with your fingers on specially designated energy meridians (acupuncture points), blocked energy is released, and your body begins to heal.

Your energy meridians are like electrical power lines that have short-circuited. Electricity can’t effectively flow through a short circuit. Only a small fraction of the power can flow through. Tapping repairs the short circuit allowing energy to once more flow freely. All systems are go.

If that sounds too complicated, or confusing, no worries. Many instructional videos are available on YouTube. You’ll be able to easily follow along and tap away your procrastination in minutes. Better yet, contact Eva for personalized help. EFT is one of many tools she uses for empowerment.

  1. Check Your Chakras

When nothing else has worked, it may be time to get your chakras analyzed. An imbalance could be sabotaging you.

Optimally chakras are perfectly balanced. But when we encounter difficulties, they shift either toward overactive or underactive. Neither is desirable, and both have undesired consequences.

For instance, an underactive Solar Plexus Chakra can leave you feeling stuck with little to no motivation. Over time the imbalance becomes greater and greater, which can really disrupt your life. You may end up spending a lot of time planning without accomplishing much at all. Sound familiar?

Fortunately, restoring balance is simple and painless. It could be the easiest solution you’ve ever tried. Meditation is one effective solution, or you could choose to get them professionally balanced, particularly if you are interested in learning what caused the imbalance.

You Can Be The Hero Of Your Story

You now realize you have viable options. How delicious does that feel?

You’ll no longer be drowning. Instead, you’ll be able to switch to a relaxed backstroke. All of that stress and worry will fade into a distant memory. You’re ready to start living the good life. A big, satisfied, grin spreads clear across your face.

But hold on. Don’t start the celebration yet. That can wait until after you kick procrastination’s butt to the curb.

So take a deep breath, and pick whichever strategy resonates with you. Then work it like a dog until it barks for mercy.

Just like that you’ll become the hero of your own story. You will resoundingly defeat procrastination and start living the full, empowered life you crave.

  1. Love this list! Especially the idea to make it a game! I’m the type a person that likes to check things off a list so making a game out of it seems like a great way to shake it up 🙂 Thanks for the insight!
