This past week I have been reading up on what it means to be an empath. I know I am an empath, but I always feel like there is more to learn so I can hone the use of this gift. Yes, I said gift. A lot of articles on websites I have read talk about being an empath as a burden. As I have learned through serious spiritual study, our gifts are to be shared with others in a way that pleases us. Often empaths can get run down if they don’t have well developed self-care routines so please remember that we are to take our of ourselves. When we don’t take good care of ourselves, that is when things can start to become unbalanced to say the least.
If you don’t have the reins on your abilities as an empath, it can feel a bit like trying to ride an unruly horse which means you could get thrown to the ground. Once you have a handle on your gifts, you can use your abilities as a tool to move forward in life just like the idea that riding a well-trained horse instead of an unruly one. Learning to hone your gifts must be treated with patience and compassion as you figure things out. I would recommend reading many sources about the subject, but you could start with someone like Dr. Judith Oroloff, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA. She has written books on being sensitive and recently one called “The Empath’s Survival Guide” that I am in the middle of reading.
Of course, there are many articles on the internet, but I ask you to check in with yourself to see if the author resonates with your believes. Today anyone can write things on the internet, but it doesn’t necessarily make them true. That is why I recommended Dr. Oroloff’s book. I am sure that a book published by the company “Sounds True” has been as well fact-checked as possible. There are many articles online called something like “Signs You Are an Empath” and I read a lot of them. Before reading a lot about being an empath, I was curious as to the purpose of this “gift” and to find out if it was indeed a gift. I do believe it is a gift and I wanted to share some of the sources I liked best from my search. The article Energy Clearing Techniques talks about 10 spiritual clearing techniques for sensitive people and empaths. These techniques are essential to self-care. This other article I chose is long, but worth the read: Empaths and Healers. Lastly, I liked the post Empaths: How to Transmute. One of the gifts for being an empath is the ability to transmute energy. Our presence makes the world a better place, that is one of the many reasons we are here. So next time you question whether this ability is a gift, remember that being an empath is part of who you are and your very presence is a gift to the world. Be gentle with yourself as you continue to better master your gift. Remember that being an empath is a gift, but you must take excellent care of your self to lead a balanced life.
